New Haven Officials Respond to Parking Concerns
New parking regulations, penalties, and enforcement plans are effective today, July 1.

With the start of the city’s new fiscal year, new parking regulations, penalties, and enforcement strategies are now in effect. Residential parking permits, required in areas designated on this map, are now available at no cost to city residents whose vehicles are currently registered in New Haven.
Before today there was a $20 fee for these permits, which are valid from October 1 through September 30 and must be renewed each year. Permits for the remainder of the current (2015-16) year can now be obtained at no cost at City Hall – at 165 Church Street – by those who live in current residential zones. New permits, still to be issued at no cost, will be required in 90 days.

Those who live outside designated residential zones, and those who live on streets not currently restricted to permit holders, are encouraged to contact their Alder to begin the process toward residential zone designation and resulting restrictions.
Effective today there is also a new, $100 penalty for violations of residential parking regulations, and stepped-up enforcement is planned for later this month to ensure proper permitting for those vehicles parked in restricted residential zones.

In the first six months of 2016 more than 2,000 parking tickets were issued for violations of New Haven’s residential zone parking rules – of some 70,000 tickets issued by the city altogether.
Unregulated parking in some of New Haven’s residential areas has become a major concern among a growing number of city residents. New parking regulations, penalties, and enforcement plans effective today are meant to address these concerns.
