New Haven Restaurant Owner Loses $40,000 In Elaborate Scam: Report

The restaurant owner said he's been trying for six months to get his money returned but to no avail, according to WTNH News 8.

NEW HAVEN, CT — The long-time owner of the Portofino Restaurant at 937 State St. is speaking out after losing $40,000 from his restaurant's bank account and despite numerous attempts to get his money back, he is still down $40,000.

Alphonse DeLucia contacted WTNH News 8 this week to share his nightmare ordeal. Everything seemed normal up until he received an email alert from his bank stating that $40,000 was missing from the checking account.

He immediately went to the bank, where he learned he was the victim of a "sophisticated online scam that pirated his account," as reported by WTNH.

The money was briefly returned but taken back, after DeLucia was informed by the bank that he wouldn't be given the money because his computer got hacked, according to the WTNH News 8 report.

Six months later, he's still missing his $40,000, and he has reached out to state and federal authorities seeking assistance in getting his money back. The bank declined to comment to WTNH News 8.
