NEW HAVEN, CT — The New Haven Symphony Orchestra will ignite the stage with Feel the Beat, a rhythm-driven concert led by Music Director Perry So on Sunday, November 23 at 3:00 p.m. at the John C. Lyman Center for the Performing Arts at Southern Connecticut State University. Featuring an electrifying mix of West African drumming, orchestral fireworks, and drumline grooves, this program celebrates the universal heartbeat that connects music across cultures.

The concert will spotlight Derrick Skye’s Between Suns, a powerful West African drum concerto featuring drum soloists Brian Jarawa Gray and Michael Mills. Between Suns illuminates how African rhythms pulse through classical, jazz, and Latin traditions. The energy continues with George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, a jazz-infused journey through the streets of the City of Light, and Silvestre Revueltas’ La noche de los Mayas, a cinematic tour-de-force of Latin percussion which will feature guest performers from the SCSU Percussion Ensemble side-by-side with NHSO’s musicians. Finally, the program will include a show-stopping moment from SCSU’s very own Blue Steel Drumline.

Music Director Perry So says, “Every rhythm on this program—whether from the concert hall, the drum circle, or the marching field—shares a common ancestry. Africa is the heartbeat at the center of the world’s music, and Feel the Beat is about experiencing, listening, and expressing that pulse together.”
