New Trees Grow In East Rock For Beloved English Language Teacher

NEW HAVEN, CT —The East Rock Community and Cultural Studies Magnet School community Thursday dedicated "Polio Place," a newly planted cluster of trees, in memory of beloved former English language teacher, Norine Ann Polio, who died Sept. 12. A tree was also dedicated in her name, in recognition of her lasting impact on the school community.

Polio, who passed away at age 77, was an English for Speakers of Other Languages teacher for 41 years.

"Ms. Polio deeply invested in the cultural and social growth of her students," New Haven Public Schools spokesperson Justin Harmon wrote. "She was passionate about creating enriching experiences for newcomers, providing them with opportunities outside the classroom to explore and engage with the wider community. She supported teachers by helping them implement sheltered instruction, ensuring that all students could thrive and feel included."

In a news release announcing the dedication, it was noted that, "In addition to her dedication to students, Polio was a warm and generous presence within the school."

"She adorned the showcases with unique pop-up books and cultural artifacts, celebrating diversity and fostering an inclusive environment," the schools shared. "Known for her kindness, she would often bring in delicious meals for staff to enjoy, fostering a sense of family and togetherness."

Though she will be "deeply missed," the much-loved teacher's "legacy will live on at East Rock through 'Polio Place.' This newly named grove will stand as a lasting symbol of her love, dedication, and selflessness."
