Obituary: Calvin Landers Bromell, 58, of New Haven
Calvin, a standout athlete in his youth and jack of all trades, was a member of the Mount Moriah Tabernacle of Praise and loving family man.
NEW HAVEN, CT - (From Colonial Funeral Home) Calvin Landers Bromell, 58, of New Haven, born February 5, 1964, in Plantersville, South Carolina to the late Mary Lee (Holmes) Bromell and Herbert Jefferson Bromell, departed this life for glory on Thursday March 10, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the youngest boy of 11 children.
Calvin graduated from James Hillhouse School in New Haven where he was an outstanding track and football player. He was an avid reader of the Bible and was ready to challenge anyone on the word and a few other topics as well. He was a member of Mount Moriah Tabernacle of Praise under the leadership of Bishop David R. Burgess Sr.
He was a talented mechanic having worked in a few fields where he put those skills of the hands and mind to work before retiring after his illness made it too difficult to continue.
Before his passing, you could always find Calvin tinkering with cars or building something, that was his passion and it did so proudly. He was truly a jack of all trades. Calvin was a talented handyman specializing in carpentry and building decks and porches; displaying his many talents without the need of formal training.
He easily made strangers he encountered feel like a friend. We lovingly deemed him, “the Mayor of Beers St.”, for he greeted all passersby while usually sitting on the porch.
He loved visiting the flea market and would often run into many familiar faces there and stop to speak. Calvin was a hard worker and loved spending time with his family.
Calvin leaves to cherish his memories four sons: Andrew Bromell of San Antonio TX, Antwon Hawkins of Middletown CT, Calvin Jr. and Jeremiah Bromell both of West Haven CT; six grandchildren: Shivanna, Jasmine, Andre, Davine Bromell, Brooklyn Grant, Zaiden Hawkins. Calvin has three brothers and six sisters: Daisy Robinson, Harriett (Roland) Smith, Sarah (James) Harris all of New Haven CT, Raymond (Lamepa) Bromell Alexandria VA, Robert Bromell of Richmond VA, Rockie (Margaret) Bromell of Carolina RI, Patricia Alford West Haven, CT, Joyce Bromell Wolcott and Marie Bromell of New Haven, along with a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his oldest Brother Nathaniel Leejay Holmes, brother-in-law Richard Robinson. Material grandparents Legrand and Sally Holmes, Paternal grandparents Doctor & Beulah Bromell
Calvin you have fought the good fight with unwavering faith, now it’s time for you to take your rest.
A Celebration of Calvin’s life will be held on Thursday March 17, 2022, at Colonial Funerals, 86 Circular Avenue, Hamden at 11am.
