NEW HAVEN, CT — At around 5 a.m. Sunday, shots rang out in the area of Sherman and Whalley avenues, with ShotSpotter activated and 911 calls to police reporting that a person had been shot, authorities said.

Police went to the scene but didn't find a gunshot victim, according to New Haven police spokesperson officer Christian Bruckhart, and began canvassing the area. They learned that the gunshot victim, a 23-year-old man, arrived by private car at the emergency department of the Saint Raphael Campus of Yale New Haven Hospital, police said. The man's condition is critical, but stable, Bruckhart said.

Investigators processed both scenes — the areas of Sherman and Whalley avenues and the hospital emergency department —and located ballistic evidence, Bruckhart said.
