Southern Hosts Free Summer Design Program For New Haven High Schoolers

The SCSU tuition-free, three-credit-earning course immerses students in visual communication, digital tools, and creative problem-solving.

NEW HAVEN, CT —Southern Connecticut State University’s Summer Studio returns July 8 though Aug. 8, giving high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore graphic design in a tuition-free, college-level setting.

Offered through the Early College program, the college course, ART 114 – Digital Foundations for Art & Design, immerses students in visual communication, digital tools, and creative problem-solving — all while earning three college credits.

Led by educators and creative professionals, students gain hands-on experience with Adobe
Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and After Effects, the University noted. And the University added that the program emphasizes visual storytelling, professionalism, and collaboration and will warp up with a public exhibition in SCSU’s Earl Hall gallery.

"We’re thrilled to welcome a new group of young designers to campus this summer," Melanie Uribe, assistant professor of art and design and president of AIGA (the Professional Association for Design) Connecticut said. "This is a chance to explore, build confidence, and understand how design can influence the world around us."

In addition to the instruction, added support includes a free Microsoft Surface laptop and a one-year Adobe Creative Cloud subscription upon program completion, as well as snacks and bus passes for students who need transportation assistance.

Who should apply? High school students entering grades 11–12 who are curious about design, eager to learn, and ready to challenge themselves creatively. No prior experience is required—just an open mind and a passion for making things. Students will leave the program with a printed portfolio, digital files, and a deeper understanding of the field of graphic design.
