Teen, 16, In Stolen Car Crashes Into 2 Police Vehicles: New Haven Police

The driver, who is 16, had an outstanding arrest warrant for accidentally shooting himself previously, police said.

NEW HAVEN, CT — A 16-year-old, who had previously accidentally shot himself, is accused of driving a stolen vehicle, which struck two police vehicles, New Haven police said.

At 1:20 a.m. May 10, police assigned to a regional task force witnessed a Kia Sportage which was reported stolen, police said.

Police tried to stop the car in the area of Long Wharf, deploying stop sticks which deflated one of the vehicle's tires, police said.

The vehicle fled the area and another stop stick was used, which deflated a second tire after the car pulled into the parking lot of the Metropolitan Business Academy on Water Street, police added.

As the car tried to leave the parking lot, it struck an unmarked police vehicle, then became disabled after striking another police car head on, police said.

The four people inside the car were all local juveniles who were taken into custody, police said. They were taken to the hospital along with two police officers and have been released, police said.

The driver, who is 16, had an outstanding arrest warrant for accidentally shooting himself on April 18, police said. He is charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, assault on a police officer, evading responsibility, and interfering with a police officer.

"This arrest highlights the danger involved in combatting the ongoing issue of stolen cars in our area," Police Chief Karl Jacobson said in a statement. "I'm thankful that no one was seriously injured and I'm proud of the work these officers do every day in trying to keep our community safe."
