New Milford Police Shooting: Man Fatally Shot By Officer Identified

A man who police say was walking towards them with a shotgun has been identified, as well as the officer who fired his weapon.

NEW MILFORD, CT — A man who police say was shot after he approached officers with a shotgun in the woods near Outlook Road Monday afternoon was identified by state police Thursday. Kostatinos Sfaelos, 62, of Outlook Road was shot by officer Christopher Hayes, 33, who has been on the force sicne April of 2014.

Police say at 4:50 p.m. they responded to a disturbance when they saw a Sfaelos leave his house and enter the woods. State police say the man then approached officers with the weapon and ignored police demands to drop the weapon.

"The male ignored New Milford police demands to drop the shotgun resulting in at least one New Milford police officer discharging at least round from their duty weapon striking the male," said Trooper Kelly Grant of the Connecticut State Police. "New Milford officers immediately rendered first aid, and EMS transported the male to Danbury Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased."

Grant said the shooting remains under investigation by the Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime detectives and the State's Attorney's Office.
