Watch: Roy Moore Says Sandy Hook Happened 'Because We've Forgotten Law Of God'

Roy Moore is a judge and Alabama Senate candidate after winning the GOP primary. He's favored to win the general election in November.

NEWTOWN, CT — A Senate candidate from Alabama recently blamed the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 on the country forgetting the law of God. In a video that aired Thursday on CNN, former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore blamed the shooting, and other crimes, on Americans turning their back on God's law.

"You wonder why we're having problems? Newtown, Connecticut?" Moore said in the video. "All across our country with killing, stealing, committing adultery? Because we've forgotten the law of God."

Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut responded to Moore's comments in a tweet Thursday. Patch reached out to the senator for a comment, and we'll let you know when we hear back.

Moore won a runoff in the Republican primary for now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions' open senate seat by beating Luther Strange, a candidate endorsed by President Donald Trump. Political experts believe Alabama's heavily Republican populace will elect Moore to the Senate seat over Doug Jones on Dec. 12.

The Alabama Republican won the primary by nearly 10 percent. As a chief justice in Alabama's Supreme Court, he has been known as the Ten Commandments Judge and has stated repeatedly that he wants to restore "Christian values" to the country. Moore is pro-gun, pro-life, pro-capital punishment, and he still does not believe former President Barack Obama was born in the United States.

Moore was famously removed from his position for refusing to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the state courthouse. Trump said despite favoring Strange, he will support Moore in the general election.

The Newtown Board of Education has asked the president to denounce conspiracy theorists and acknowledge that the shooting took place. Trump has yet to respond to the district's letter.
