Assistant Fire Chief Struck And Killed Crossing Street In Newtown

An assistant fire chief in Newtown was struck and killed by a driver on Monday night.

NEWTOWN, CT — An assistant fire chief in Newtown was struck and killed by a driver on Monday night.

The Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association identified the victim as Peter Blomberg, 72, who served as assistant chief of the Botsford Fire Department.

Blomberg was hit as he crossed Church Hill Road near its intersection with Dayton Street.

Newtown Police Department, Newtown Ambulance, and Sandy Hook Fire Department were called to the scene of the accident at around 6:15 p.m., according to a Newtown Police report.

Blomberg was taken to Danbury Hospital for injuries sustained in the accident and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Church Hill Road remained closed in the area of the accident until approximately 10:30 p.m.

Officers on scene determined that a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road and struck Bloomberg crossing Church Hill Road towards the westbound shoulder on his way to attend a town commission meeting.

The Tacoma driver remained on scene and has been cooperative with the investigation, according to police.

The Botsford Fire Rescue posted on social media that "We ask for your thoughts and prayers and appreciate the outpouring of support thus far. We offer both our sincerest condolences and gratitude to the Blomberg family in this tragic time. There will be more to follow in the days ahead."

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue posted on social media that "We are so saddened by the loss of fellow firefighter, Botsford Asst. Chief Pete Blomberg. A long time Newtown resident and friend. We are here you @botsford_fire_rescue every step of the way."
