Crews Working to Make Newtown Safe

Due to the storm, power is out and roads are closed around town.

Due to the storms on Tuesday, all emergency services - along with public works crews - are actively working on making the town of Newtown safe for travel.

The town has experienced numerous electrical power disruptions due to the strong storm that entered the area late this afternoon.

The police and fire departments are responding to downed trees and power lines, along with medical emergencies and routine police calls for service.

The town is at a 37 percent power outage with 10 or more roads closed due to wires down. Major intersections are without traffic signals, so officials are urging motorists to be careful as they move about town.

At 8:15 p.m., several Eversource crews entered Newtown to restore electrical service to the community. The police department, Newtown Emergency Management, public works director, and First Selectman Llodra are actively working with utilities in prioritizing restoration efforts.

Residents are asked to stay away from downed power lines and treat them as if they were energized. Also use caution when using a home generator.

Residents are also urged to remember, and follow, all the safety rules that have been established through the difficult storms experienced through the past few years.
