It's Hot Out There. Here's Where to Stay Cool in Newtown

Our thermometer reads 87, but you'd be forgiven for thinking it seems like a little more of a scorcher outside. With the heat index sitting at 89 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, Newtown officials are hoping to get the word out about the three cooling centers open in town today.

They are:

C.H. Booth Library, open Mon. - Thurs., 9:30 am to 8 pm, Fri. 11 am to 5 pm, and Sat. 9:30 am to 5 pm.

Newtown Municipal Center, on the Fairfield Hills Campus, open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Newtown Senior Center, open Mon. - Fri. 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

First Selectman Pat Llodra, Emergency Management Director Bill Halstead and the Newtown Health District issued a release Tuesday asking residents to look out for each other in the heat.

"We ask that you check on any elderly or frail neighbors to be certain they are doing OK in this weather," said the release. "You might want to suggest that they come to the Municipal Center, or any other 'cool locations' if their residence is overheated."

Other suggestions:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid strenuous activities
  • Take frequent rests for cooling down in an air conditioned area or near a fan
  • Wear light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine
  • Eat lightly throughout the day
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or long periods in the sun (especially between the hours of 12 noon and 4pm which are the hottest hours during the day)
