Good morning, Newtown residents. This is First Selectman Jeff Capeci. Yesterday’s storm has left Newtown significantly affected. To expedite our recovery, l’ve issued a local emergency declaration to secure state and federal aid. I've been in touch with Governor Lamont, Representative Bolinsky, and Senator Hwang, who are also mobilizing state resources to assist US.

Currently, 36 locations on state and town roads have suffered severe damage. In four areas, residents are cut off, and Public Works is focusing on restoring their access to main roads. South Main Street has reopened; however, Berkshire Road, Route 34, near the Monroe line, is restricted to local traffic only and remains closed south of Jordan Hill Road due to severe washouts. Making all roads passable again will take several days to weeks. As damage is evaluated and we are better able to forecast repairs | will update you.
You may see public works employees out on our roads assessing or repairing damage. Please allow them to do their work undisturbed. They are working long hours to make Newtown drivable again and deserve your patience.

We are collaborating closely with our Public Works Department and state and federal partners to restore road access as quickly as possible. We will provide updates on our progress through Town social media channels and the Town website. Code Red messages will be used when the need arises. Recovery will take time, but we are committed to getting through this together. Please check in on friends and family, especially the elderly, to ensure their well-being. For emergencies, always dial 911.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
