Newtown High School Students Tackle Serious Issues with PSAs

How do you get the word out to the next generation about dealing with important issues like bullying, abuse and drug use? Newtown High School students are leading the way with a series of PSAs.

Students in Matt Childs' and Melissa Zigmont's 11th-grade health class developed a series of PSAs designed to help other high school students navigate what can be a difficult world.

"They must have a clear message that can persuade their peers to make the right choice," said Zigmont. "Students have the freedom to choose whatever topic they have been directly impacted by, or have interest in."

Childs said the students created story boards, wrote scripts, provided data to support their message and tied the packages together with a piece of music.

"They did a nice job attempting a difficult task and topic," he said.

We've included one such PSA above -- it's the second-place winner, a short dealing with the painful effects of bullying, produced by students Colleen Hart, Serena Venticinque and Alexa Reyes. To see more, visit the Newtown High School blog maintained by Principal Charles Dumais.
