Newtown Man Charged With Sexually Assaulting Children

BREAKING: Police say the assaults took place over several years.

NEWTOWN, CT — A local man turned himself in to police Monday on an active warrant for charges of sexually assaulting minor children, police say. Richard Saunders, 72, of Newtown is accused of several incidents of sexual contact with children, according to police.

School Resource Officer William Chapman investigated several reported incidents of Saunders' alleged crimes over the past several years. Saunders was charged with four counts each of impairing the morals of a child, risk of injury to a minor and sexual assault in the fourth degree.

Police held Saunders on a $100,000 bond pending his arraignment.

Saunders plead not guilty to the charges in Danbury Superior Court Monday and was released from custody on a $100,00 bond.
