Newtown Man Attempts to Swim from Martha's Vineyard to Nantucket

The 63-year-old entered the water on Tuesday morning.

A 63-year-old Newtown man attempted to swim from Martha’s Vineyard to Nantucket, reports the Inquirer and Mirror.

Jim Bayles entered the water at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and was hoping to complete the 14-mile swim by 4:30 p.m. However, he called off the swim after running out of energy.

By about 3 p.m., he was swimming into the wind, which was sapping his strength. He spent seven hours in the water and made it more than 10 miles. He was 3.7 miles from Eel Point.

He swam to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Connecticut, Fisher College in Boston, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
