Newtown Middle School Closure Hearing to be Held
The town is considering closing Newtown Middle School and moving students to Reed and the high school due to declining enrollment.
NEWTOWN - The Newtown Board of Education will hear comments from Newtown residents for a vote next month on closing the middle school due to declining enrollment, according to The News Times.
The hearing will take place at the school board meeting on Tuesday evening and will be a subject of a joint budget meeting Wednesday with the Legislative Council, Board of Education, Board of Finance and the Board of Selectmen.
The proposal includes keeping students in kindergarten through fourth grade in the four elementary schools, combining fifth through seventh grade at Reed Intermediate School and moving eighth-graders to the high school, according to the report. Reed currently is for fifth and sixth graders.
The vote is scheduled for early December.
