Newtown Police Hosting Drug Take-back Day

Newtown police are taking part in a national prescription drug take-back.

NEWTOWN, CT — Newtown police and the Drug Enforcement Agency will be hosting another drug take back event on Oct. 28, the department announced in a press release. It is the 14th opportunity in seven years that police are offering, and the event will be held at the police station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents can dispose of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous, no questions will be asked.

Americans turned in 450 tons of prescription drugs at 5,500 sites.

Police say rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, and studies show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends including from the home medicine cabinet.

Usual methods of disposal, including flushing or disposing of medicines, pose health and safety hazards, according to police.
