Newtown Police Probe Phishing Scam
Police say the scheme tried to get a resident to hand over personal information.

NEWTOWN, CT — Police are alerting residents after a Newtowner was the victim of an attempted phishing scam. Police say a resident received a letter from what appeared to be a well-known financial institution, which was later determined to not be legitimate.
Police say the letter said the resident owed a large sum of money, and that they should contact the institution and provide their social security information and other personal identification information.
Anyone who receives such a letter should not contact the institution at the phone number listed, but find out if it is legitimate. Residents are also urged to never provide personal information via phone or computer.
