Holick was hit by a car while directing traffic in 2015, according to NBC Connecticut.
"If I see a car coming at an excessive speed I figure they are not going to stop, I will get right in their way. That way I look at it is if they hit me they are going to stop and those children are going to be safe behind me," Holick told NBC Connecticut.

On her final day on duty, residents honked when they passed Holick and thanked her for her service to town. A gofundme was created by Valerie Hart of Newtown to help offset the costs of Hart's retirement.
"Kathy Holick has become a staple to the community of Newtown," Hart wrote in the gofundme page's description. "She has been a beacon of hope and positivity throughout the most trying times in this town. Whether at work or about the town, her infectious laugh, energy and positive attitude leaves a smile on the face of everyone she encounters."
