Official Guidelines For Sandy Hook Memorial Released

NEWTOWN, CT — The Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission is now accepting applications for the town's permanent memorial to the 20 students and six educators killed during the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting on Dec. 14, 2012. The commission is now accepting designs for the memorial, located on a 5.3-acre property in Sandy Hook.

“With your submission, we hope that you will be purposeful with your thoughts, keeping in mind the reason your design is being sought, and are sensitive to the many individuals and families who have been impacted by that horrific day,” said chairman Kyle Lyddy.

All interested designers are invited to submit an item, including but not limited to landscape architects, architects, and artists. Guidelines for submissions can now be viewed on the Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Website.

According to the town website, the registration form and biographical statement will be available to applicants on Sept. 22.

Designers will submit the registration form and bio, then provide designers with a unique identification number. Designers will use that number to provide information.

“While we have outlined a detailed document as a base for your work, we are hopeful this doesn’t limit
the creativity of your submission,” Lyddy explained.

Designers will only be able to access the site through scheduled site walks and by appointment only.

“It’s an emotional task," said Lyddy. "We’ve attempted to be diligent with our approach while ensuring every decision we’re making is guided by our mission statement of honoring those lost on that horrific day.”
