Preview: Newtown Players Kick Off New Season [Video]

The season opens with "The Little Dog Laughed" at the Little Theatre on Orchard Hill Road.

The Newtown Town Players' 2013 season opens with "The Little Dog Laughed," by Douglas Carter Beane, at the Little Theatre at 18 Orchard Hill Road.

Originally produced Off-Broadway, the play is the story of an agent who worries her client, a well-known actor, will see his career derailed due to a "slight case of homosexuality." The play reflects well-known issues of actors who struggle with "coming out of the closet" and how it affects their career choices and identities.

This is director David Bass's second show at the Little Theatre.

"It's a really intimate space, so there's a close connection between the action onstage and the audience," says Bass. "And it makes a big difference, as opposed to being in a huge theatre where you're separate from it. Here you're right in it and it's an exciting experience from the audience. It's also a beautiful space -- the theatre is great. It's got a very loyal audience who have been coming here for years."
