Rain Cancels Duck Race, But Show Goes On

The ducks didn't race, but about 50 people gathered in the rain on the banks of the Pootatuck River in Sandy Hook Saturday afternoon nonetheless. They were holding umbrellas or wearing their hoods up, some holding ducks of their own.

One was resident Jackie Dachenhausen, who was present to collect her second prize winnings: a weekend vacation that includes a gift certificate for the Sheraton Hotel.

"We're glad we came down," she said. "We always wanted to go to the Woodbury one, and we live just down the road now. Wish we'd gotten to see the ducks!"

Duck Race chair Bob Schmidt said it would have been dangerous for too many people to be walking around on the wet grass, that ducks might have just passed by the collection system, and that river crews may have been put in danger by the strong currents of the swelling Pootatuck River.

"It was the worst weather we have ever had since we started this in 2000," he told Patch.
