Sandy Hook Woman Involved In State's Largest Kidney Exchange: Report

NEW HAVEN, CT — A Bethel man and Sandy Hook woman were the lucky recipients of a kidney as part of the largest kidney exchange in state history at Yale New Haven Hospital, reports the News-Times. William Greenwood was the recipient of a kidney from a New Hampshire woman, and Janet Labati received a kidney from Laura Miller of Lyme.

18 patients underwent surgeries done over a two-month period where nine patients received new kidneys. The first set of transplants were done on May 9 and the last ones were completed in late June.

The exchange arose after a series of potential matches had fallen through leading to a chain of other donors being discovered.

The patients gathered for a reunion at Yale New Haven Hospital Thursday to commemorate the medical milestone.
