Smell, Smoke In Newtown From Out Of State: Town Officials

Newtown is experiencing smoky conditions from Massachusetts and New York, First Selectman Jeff Capeci advised on Wednesday.

NEWTOWN, CT — The stench you may have smelled throughout the day in town Wednesday was not from around these parts.

"We are experiencing smoky conditions today from Southbury, Massachusetts and New York," First Selectman Jeff Capeci said in an email to residents. "Smell and visible smoke are apparent."

If either was objectionable to residents, Capeci advised they keep their windows closed.

Due to the current drought conditions, a ban on outside burning remains in effect in the area. Capeci said the ban would likely remain in effect even after Thursday's projected rain.

The National Weather Service pegs that chance of rain at 100 percent.
