A York peppermint patty biscotti? Why not? Since turning her skill with baked goods into a home business earlier this year, Sandy Hook mom Stephanie Schneiderman can deliver.
Schneiderman launched Biscotti, Etc. after friends kept urging her to take her talents to a new level. A former teacher, Schneiderman had moved to Sandy Hook from Chicago and gone back to school for radiology technology. While recuperating from an accident, she had time to think about her future.
"While I was laying around, I had a great epiphany," she says. "That wasn't what I wanted to do."
She wanted to make biscotti.
"My mom used to make them when I was a kid," she says. It was one of her fondest memories. "Later, I found my mom's cookbook and started making them myself."
Schneiderman is one of a growing number of small business owners in Newtown choosing to work from home. According to the Economic Development Commission, more than half of all businesses in Newtown are home or web-based.
Aside from peppermint patty, Biscotti, Etc. offers both usual and unusual flavors: from chocolate almond and cranberry-pistachio to gingerbread and pine nut. Schneiderman uses a commercial kitchen at St. John's Episcopal Church to craft her concoctions. Her treats were found at Destination Newtown and Newtown's Earth Day 2013 festival, and in the future she'll be partnering with Rock Ridge Country Club.
Her family -- her husband, daughter and two friendly Belgian Malanois dogs -- love have so many treats around.
"I can't keep filling the jars!" she says.
