3 New Members Sworn In At Botsford Fire Department In Newtown

A trio of new members, including a fallen chief's brother, join Botsford Fire in Newtown.

NEWTOWN, CT — Every community has first responders who are leaving a local legacy in the areas they serve.

In light of this, Patch and T-Mobile are spotlighting local EMTs, firefighters and police officers who are making a difference in their communities.

Earlier this month, three probationary members were officially sworn in to Botsford Fire Department, which serves Newtown.

One has an exceptional legacy to live up to. Bob Blomberg is the brother of the company's late assistant chief, Pete Blomberg, who died last year when he was struck by a motorist while going to a fire commissioner meeting.

Until very recently, Pete was among the first responders at fire scenes to strap on an air pack and head into burning buildings. According to the company's website, "He had a spectacular record of responding to nearly all the calls for service Botsford Fire & Rescue received and was often among those first on the scene at calls in other districts."

Following his brother's tragic accident, fire officials said "Bob stepped up," and joined the fire department, "and has been a very active member since."

Botsford has recently created a "social member" position for members of the community who would like to help the company in ways other than running into burning buildings.

Camila Jones was among the first to answer that call. She will have responsibilities involving events and food coordination, and also marches with the Sandy Hook Ladies Auxiliary.

Lauren Botsford is a new social member with responsibilities that inlcude maintaining EMS gear. She is also an active certified EMT.

"We are fortunate to have these individuals step forward and help the department and the community," fire officials wrote on Facebook, where they posted a photo from the trio's swearing-in ceremony.

If you are interested in stepping up, joining, Botsford Fire Department is accepting applications through their website here.
