Trooper From Newtown Saves Driver From Burning Car: VIDEO

The incident occurred on I-84 in Middlebury on Monday, Nov. 27.

MIDDLEBURY, CT — Connecticut State Troopers and passersby rescued a White Plains, NY driver from a burning car on I-84 in Middlebury on Monday, according to authorities. Watch the videos below.

Patrick J. Lamorgese, 26, suffered minor injuries when his vehicle veered off the road and crashed at about 2:35 p.m. near exit 17 westbound. Two troopers also sustained minor cuts to their hands from a broken window during the rescue.

Sgt. Michael Dogali, a Newtown native according to the News Times, took down the fire with his fire extinguisher.

"Sgt. Dogali of Troop G - Bridgeport was traveling I-84 westbound, in the area of exit 17, on his way home from in-service training and quickly arrived at the crash and car fire," wrote state police in a release. "Sgt. Dogali was met by passersby who were attempting to remove the trapped operator from the car.

"Sgt. Dogali used the fire extinguisher from his cruiser to put out the fire, however the fire continued as Sgt. Dogali and passersby attempted to free the operator.

"Trooper First Class McGeever and Trooper First Class Welch both of Troop A arrived on scene a short
time later and were able to help Sgt. Dogali and passersby free the trapped operator."

Lamorgese was treated in Waterbury Hospital. State police said he was driving with a suspended license, and was issued an infraction for failure to maintain his lane.
