'We Are Newtown' Scholarships Will Help Fulfill Students' Education Dreams

Four Newtown High School students will have a ticket to their dreams of becoming educators, thanks to the hard work of one Newtown-based fund.

We Are Newtown, a group founded in the aftermath of the Dec. 14 shooting, will award four graduating students scholarships to pursue careers as teachers and educators. The four students will be announced at a ceremony 2 p.m. Saturday at the Newtown Youth Academy courtyard.

"Our goal is to inspire kindness, while promoting the positive stories that continue to come out of tragedy," said We Are Newtown's Kyle Lyddy. "We felt there was no better way to honor those lost in an elementary school, than to support those looking to educate young people."

Teachers and family members affected by the shooting will present the scholarship, according to We Are Newtown.

The group, formed in the days after the shooting, has raised about $200,000 to date, much of which has come from t-shirt sales. They say they hope to continue distributing $26,000 each year in honor of the 26 lives lost in the shooting.
