Weekend Newtown: See A Play Or Attend A Horse Show

If you're still looking for something to do this weekend and you'd like to keep it local, you'll be glad to know you've got options -- and some very diverse ones at that. Here are our top five picks for fun activities for the family this weekend -- feel free to suggest your own!

  • The Newtown Town Players present A Picasso, now in its second week at the Little Theatre on Orchard Hill Road. The play follows Pablo Picasso in his height around the years of his famous painting Guernica.
Directed by Fairfield's Ruth Anne Baumgartner, the play stars Roxbury's Rob Pawlikowski as Picasso. Curtain times are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday, July 21. Tickets are $20, $15 for matinees.

  • On Sunday, Healing Newtown presents a benefit concert to preserve their creative arts space, and it features an eclectic lineup of musicians with something for everyone. "Random Compassion: Act 1" will run from noon to 6 p.m. at Danbury's city center green, headlined by Rush cover band Limelight, reggae band the Skanktones and Eugene Dobbs and the Ultimate Nu-Cellers Band, with many more performances on the bill. No admission, but donations are suggested.
  • Enjoy a day of equine competition and horsemanship at the Second Company Governor's Horse Guard. The annual fan favorite has been recognized by the Connecticut Hunter and Jumper Association and the Connecticut Horse Shows Association Competition. It begins 8 a.m. Sunday, July 21.

  • Celebrity guest singer Samantha Cole joins a lineup of musicians at Proud Mary's Lounge at the Inn at Newtown. Cole has produced Billboard hits, including songs covered by American Idol contestants. Doors open at 7 p.m. Saturday night. Read more about this concert on Patch.

  • The EverWonder Experience for kids continues free of charge through the weekend, giving kids a chance to see science and art exhibits, like their current Cool Moves: The Artistry of Motion. The "miniature version of what we hope to offer in the permanent museum" is located at 31 Pecks Lane.
