North Branford Three-Peats In Class S Field Hockey Finals

The Thunderbirds won their seventh overall state title with a 4-1 win over Canton.

WETHERSFIELD, CT - For the third straight season and seventh time overall, North Branford reigned supreme in Class S field hockey, dominating Canton 4-1 in the title tilt at Wethersfield High School.

Keana Criscuolo had a hand in each Thunderbird goal. She netted an unassisted tally five mi uses into the contest, then scored again with nine seconds left in the opening quarter, assisted by Lindsey Onofrio.

In the third quarter, Alicia Schmidt converted a penalty corner, assisted by Criscuolo. Sophia Toto finished off a 2-on-1 with Criscuolo with 9:45 to play to culminate the Thunderbird scoring.

Canton avoided a shutout when Paige Sidrane tipped in a blast by Erin Mackin with 9:07 remaining.

"It was a huge team effort; we had the seven seniors but everybody plays a role and I'm a firm believer of that," North Branford coach Babby Nuhn said.

North Branford's victory extended a state record for Nuhn. Her first state crown came in 1980, and the latest triumph gives her a span of 43 years from first title to most recent.

"We had kids from the 1970s here; it's about them, it's about all this fantastic tradition going on here," Nuhn said.
