According to the National Center for Asphalt Technology at Auburn University, crack sealing is a pavement maintenance technique. Cracks in asphalt or concrete roads are filled with a sealant to prevent water and other materials from penetrating and causing further damage. The process, which involves cleaning the cracks, applying a sealant, and allowing it to cure, helps to "extend the life of the pavement and prevent more costly repairs."
