Shoplifter Arrested After Fleeing Store Near Traffic Enforcement Campaign: North Haven PD
Police said the suspect ran out of the store –right near where 12-plus officers were conducting traffic stops – and was quickly apprehended.
NORTH HAVEN, CT — A 19-year-old New York man was arrested Tuesday after fleeing from a shoplifting incident at Dick’s Sporting Goods – right near where police were conducting a regional traffic enforcement campaign, according to officials.
Police posted a “public service announcement” regarding the incident on Facebook on Wednesday.
“There is never a good time to shoplift, but during our regional traffic enforcement campaign it is def NOT a good time to shoplift,” police wrote.

Police received a call around 2:50 p.m. regarding two men who left Dick’s Sporting Goods after stealing items, according to officials.
One person left in a vehicle, while the other fled on foot, according to police.

“It just so happened that our regional traffic enforcement group was on Universal Drive, where 12+ officers (who had conducted over 100 car stops that day) heard the call come in,” police wrote.
Police said 19-year-old Mizael Esqueche of New York was quickly apprehended after a brief foot pursuit. He was charged with fourth-degree larceny and interfering with police.
The second suspect, who had left in a vehicle, has been identified and police said a warrant for their arrest will be sought.
“We will continue to say it; theft, in any form or price point, is not tolerated in North Haven,” police wrote. “We remain committed to protecting businesses and holding offenders accountable. If you commit crimes in North Haven, expect to get arrested or have a warrant for your arrest in the future.”
