Tornado Reported In North Haven; 4.5K Without Power

Several witnesses reported seeing a tornado touch down in North Haven on Thursday, according to officials.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — Several witnesses reported seeing a tornado touch down in North Haven on Thursday afternoon, according to officials. North Haven was hit hard by Thursday’s storm and there were more than 60 areas with trees down across roads with electrical wires as of 6 p.m., according to police.

Numerous 911 callers and witnesses reported a tornado through the Montowese section of town.

“The North Haven Emergency Operations Center has been activated in an effort to manage hundreds of fire and police incidents,” according to an emergency message sent by the town. “Residents need to remain indoors and avoid venturing outside or travelling in their cars. Excessive traffic is complicating our efforts to reach a number of emergency scenes.

“The Emergency Operations Center consists of North Haven Fire and Police Departments, Department of Public Works, United Illuminating and several other town agencies as needed. Assistance has been requested through the State of CT Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security for additional resources to assist with clearing roads and obtaining access to neighborhoods.

There were more than 4,500 United Illuminating customers without power in North Haven as of 6:50 p.m.
