Victim Restrains Suspect In Car Theft At BJ’s: North Haven Police

A 16-year-old was arrested after being restrained by a victim in a car theft at BJ's gas station in North Haven, according to police.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A 16-year-old New Haven resident was arrested after being restrained by a victim in a car theft at BJ’s gas station in North Haven on Sunday, according to police.

Police responded to BJ’s on Universal Drive on March 30 on the report of a stolen vehicle.

Arriving officers took one juvenile, who police said was being restrained by a victim, into custody.

While at the scene, police said they learned that several vehicles were stolen from the area by multiple suspects.

Stolen vehicles in connection with the incident were soon recovered from multiple locations, including Universal Drive, in front of Dick’s Sporting Goods in North Haven, New Haven and Shelton, according to police.

The 16-year-old was charged with third-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

“While we do not advocate citizens confronting suspects committing crimes, particularly property crimes, we do understand the frustration individuals are feeling,” North Haven police wrote in a post on Facebook. “Incidents such as these often involve multiple suspects, who may be armed. We are thankful nobody was hurt and that the victim’s vehicle was located quickly.”
