Car Catches Fire On Merritt Parkway In Norwalk: FD

Fire officials said a car caught fire in the grass breakdown lane of the Merritt Parkway in Norwalk.

NORWALK, CT — A car caught fire Tuesday morning in the breakdown lane of the Merritt Parkway in Norwalk, according to the Norwalk Fire Department.

In a news release, Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Coppola said the "fully involved car fire" was found around 9:30 a.m. safely out of range of oncoming traffic in the grass breakdown lane of Route 15 just before the 17-B exit ramp.

The vehicle was unoccupied and no injuries were reported, according to Coppola.

Additional water supply was needed due to a lack of usable water sources available on the parkway, Coppola said.

Westport firefighters were initially called to the area as well, however the call was canceled prior to their arrival because Norwalk crews had the fire under control already, according to Coppola.

Connecticut State Police and Norwalk EMS also responded to the area, Coppola said.

Highway operations concluded around 10 a.m., according to Coppola.
