City Man Arrested for Stealing Bronze Plaques from Tombstones

Hector Hernandez, 38, allegedly stole over $100,000 worth of plaques in February and attempted to sell them in New Jersey, according to police.

 

A 38 year-old Norwalk man was arrested on Monday for allegedly stealing $107,000 worth of bronze plaques from numerous city cemeteries, including St. John's Cemetery, according to police.

The incident was reported on Feb. 26 and with assistance from the Secaucus Police Department in New Jersey, Norwalk police were able to recover the plaques where Hector Hernandez of 4 Longview Court allegedly tried to sell them as scrap metal, police said. Hernandez allegedly stole plaques from the tombstones of children, veterans and other residents, police said.

After a warrant was issued, Herandez was arrested and charged with first-degree larceny and making a false statement. He posted a $20,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 19.
