Cocktails for a Cause, Norwalk Symphony, Center for Global Studies Open House

There are all sorts of fundraisers and holiday activities happening around Norwalk this week.

Center for Global Studies Magnet Program Hosts Open House on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6:30p.m. for prospective students and parents. The inter-district magnet school languages program, within Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, will also host a second open house onTuesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 a.m. 

Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6:00p.m. to 8:30p.m. Cocktails for a Cause at Klaff’s to benefit The Sunshine Kids, a nonprofit organization which provides kids with cancer a break from treatment and hospitals by funding opportunities for travel and opportunities to participate in positive activities with other children who are dealing with similar issues. 

Saturday, Dec. 7 at 5:00p.m., the Norwalk Symphony will present their Holiday Extravaganza Concert in the Norwalk Concert Hall at 125 East Avenue in Norwalk.  The program will launch with a Sing-Along of one of the great classics of the holiday season, the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah.   The orchestra and soloists will be on the stage, led by Music Director Jonathan Yates, but the audience will be the chorus.   

Members of the Serendipity Chorale and the New Canaan High School Chorus will be scattered throughout the audience as leaders of the choir to ensure the highest level of music making.  Four soloists with prestigious international careers –Amelia Watkins, Leanne Gonzalez-Singer, Thomas Young, and Michael Rice– will sing the famous recitatives and arias.

After intermission, the concert will become even more festive, with the Men’s Gospel Choir of the Pivot Ministries singing gospel music, after which all of the choruses, soloists and audience members will sing favorite holiday carols with the orchestra.

Monday, Dec. 2 through December at the Norwalk Public Library Fines will be Halved. Round up your overdue library books because beginning on Monday the library will halve your fines. On one condition. Just bring in an unwrapped new toy to The Norwalk Public Library or South Norwalk BranchLibrary to benefit Person To Person. 

When the library patron brings in an unwrapped new toy that will benefit the organization Person to Person which provides emergency assistance to needy families in Norwalk and neighboring towns of Wilton, Westport and Weston. 

Please bring your library materials back to either the Norwalk Public Library on 1 Belden Ave. or the South Norwalk Branch on 10 Washington St. along with a toy donation. 

Wilton Go Green gives us the heads-up about a special screening of Gasland Part II, with Q&A on Dec. 3 at 6:30- 9:30p.m. at the Nature Discovery Center, 10 Woodside Lane in Westport. This documentary is about the personal and environmental dangers and implications of fracking or hydraulic fracturing, the controversial method of extracting natural gas and oil.
