NORWALK, CT — Himalaya SoNo, a culturally rich restaurant, bar, music venue and retail shop showcasing the authentic flavors and rich culture of Nepal, Tibet and Northern India, held its grand opening Wednesday afternoon in South Norwalk.
Located at 99 Washington Street, owner Nwang Sherpa said this block of SoNo was an ideal space for his new restaurant due to how it has rapidly evolved into a lively restaurant hub with a diverse selection of exciting new dining options.
He also noted the location's ample parking for customers and easy access to the South Norwalk train station were additional key factors.

"Our vision is to create a unique space that seamlessly merges exceptional dining with live cultural performances, traditional arts and a curated shopping experience," Sherpa said to Patch. "The 4,000-square-foot interior, complete with a charming patio, provides the perfect setting to bring this dynamic concept to life."
Sherpa, a proud immigrant from Nepal who also owns and operates Himalaya restaurants in Scarsdale and Yorktown, N.Y., saw the opportunity to open a new restaurant in SoNo as a chance to take the Himalayan brand to a new level.

"The Himalaya brand has clearly carved out a distinctive niche by combining exceptional cuisine with a rich cultural experience," Sherpa said. "Since its inception in 2017, it has focused not just on food, but on creating an environment that immerses guests in the heritage and traditions of the Himalayan region."
He also noted the success of his Westchester County, N.Y., restaurants are a testament to the brand's ability to merge culinary excellence with cultural storytelling.
"Expanding to Norwalk seemed like a perfect next step in reaching more people who are eager to experience authentic Nepalese and Indian flavors," Sherpa said.

Menu highlights include handmade momos (dumplings), a variety of korma (almond and cashew sauce) and curry dishes from throughout the region, tandoori meats and shrimp, the always popular chicken tikka masala, spicy vindaloo, noodle and rice dishes and a wide variety of vegetarian-friendly specialties such as chana saag (chickpeas in spinach gravy) and dal (lentils) makhini.
Sherpa also noted many of the "must-try dishes" on the SoNo menu showcase the rich flavors of Nepal, particularly from the northern regions.
"A few fan favorites include our chicken or beef chili, or the savory mushroom chili, along with the Nepali thali platter, offering a delightful mix of rice, vegetables, lentil soup and your choice of protein." Sherpa said. "Our momos, Nepali dumplings, are a standout, with options for chicken, beef or vegetables, and don't miss our thukpa soup, featuring a rich, flavorful broth with tender noodles."
For the menu's southern cuisine, Sherpa highlighted the aromatic garlic naan, fiery lamb vindaloo, flavorful beef curry and succulent chicken tandoori, among other items.
Additional press materials noted the large Washington Street space has been completely transformed into a multi-sensory experience.
The restaurant is wrapped in large-format Himalayan artwork and artistic details characteristic of the vast Himalayan region of artists and craftsmen, and a performance stage will house vibrant cultural events featuring traditional dances and live Himalayan instrumental music.
An expansive patio can also be enjoyed in season and will be used for dining, art activations and pop-up markets.
When guests enter the space, they are greeted by a gift shop filled with vibrant housewares, jewelry, clothing and unique gifts that embody Himalayan culture for customers to take home.
"More than just dining, we aim to share the stories of our rich culture, offering an immersive experience that goes beyond the plate," Sherpa said. "Our guests will savor authentic Himalayan cuisine from Nepal and India, accompanied by live music, captivating cultural performances and a boutique featuring exquisite handcrafted jewelry and regional art."
According to Sherpa, his vision is to transform every visit to Himalaya SoNo into a journey where customers can enjoy delectable food while immersing themselves in the rich history and timeless traditions of the Himalayas.
"This integration of culture and cuisine is a key part of why Himalaya has become so much more than just a restaurant," Sherpa said, "it's a cultural destination in itself."
