Norwalk 2025 Primary Election: What To Know

A Democratic primary election is set to take place this month in Norwalk ahead of Election Day in November. Here's what you need to know.

NORWALK, CT — A Democratic primary election is set to take place this month in Norwalk ahead of Election Day on Nov. 4.

According to the city's website, the Democratic primary will be held Sept. 9, and only registered Democrats may vote in it.

According to a sample ballot posted to the Office of the Secretary of State's website, votes may choose between two Democratic mayoral candidates to represent the party in November: Barbara Smyth or Darlene Young.

Both candidates are members of the city's Common Council, of which Smyth serves as council president.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 9, and schools will be in session that day.

To ensure the safety of students and staff, voters may only use designated voter entrances and exits and are not allowed to access any student areas, including hallways or any interior doors accessible from the voting area, according to the city's website.

Voters are also asked to follow all posted signage, which "will be strictly enforced."

"The Registrar of Voters, in collaboration with Norwalk Public Schools and the Norwalk Police Department, is committed to maintaining a secure environment for students throughout the school day," a notice posted to the city's website reads. "Any member of the public who attempts to enter through unapproved access points or enter hallways or interior areas of the building must first report to the school’s main office. NO EXCEPTIONS! Police will be on site to assist if there are any concerns. Your cooperation is appreciated in helping us maintain a safe and orderly voting day."

The deadline to register or switch to the Democratic Party to vote in the primary election is still open to unaffiliated or new voters until:

-Online: Monday, Sept. 2, 2025 by 11:59 p.m.

-In person: Monday, Sept. 8, 2025 by 12 p.m.

The deadline to switch from another party affiliation to the Democratic Party for the primary election ended on June 9, 2025, according to the city.
