Automated License Plate Readers and your MV Tax
More Towns are using automated License Plate Readers for tax purposes

Alert! Some Towns in CT are adopting Automated License Reader Technologies to assess MV Property Taxes. ORANGE residents with valid vehicle registrations identifying the Town of Orange (Town 107) receiving such notices should NOT pay these Notices but call the Orange Tax Office for guidance. We will provide you with a letter to return to the agency requesting such additional payment that you are validly registered in the Town and that the Town is claiming ownership of your vehicles for tax purposes. (Only one Town may do that.) DO NOT IGNORE such notifications as your vehicle could end up being impounded. Alert all your drivers in the household as well that this could occur.
Those most likely to be affected are those working nights or spending lots of time with friends that go over the evening and early morning hours in Towns with the Automated License Reader Programs. Parents, students that use a loaned family vehicle are particularly vulnerable to this billing method. Call the Tax Office if you receive such a notice. 203-891-4736. The Orange Town Tax Office is aware of at least two of these instances in the last couple of weeks. Thomas P Hurley, Collector of Taxes, Town of Orange.
