Island A 'Source Of Concern' Due To Unauthorized Camping, Other Issues: Orange Police

Police said Wooster Island in the Housatonic River has become "a source of concern" due to unauthorized camping and alcohol consumption.

ORANGE, CT — Unauthorized camping, alcohol consumption and other issues have led to Wooster Island becoming "a source of concern" for local residents, according to Orange and Shelton police.

In a notice to boaters posted to Facebook last week, Shelton Deputy Chief Kevin Stratton said the Housatonic River island has recently become a source of concern for local residents due to "unauthorized camping, alcohol consumption and loud music."

Police also noted the island has been the site of recent boating accidents resulting from unsafe navigation practices.

"Please be advised that Wooster Island is private property," Stratton said on Facebook, "and the owner has explicitly stated that access is prohibited."

Shelton police said they are taking enforcement actions to address these issues in collaboration with Orange police and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

In a separate post on Facebook, Orange police said the island "has recently become a nuisance to area residents due to trespassers camping, drinking and playing loud music. It has also been the site of recent boat crashes due to unsafe operation."

Orange police reiterated the island is private property, and the owner has stated that no one has permission to be there.

"We have partnered with DEEP and [Shelton police] to take enforcement action to address this ongoing problem," Orange police said on Facebook. "If you're a boater on the Housatonic, please note that this island is off-limits to trespassers."
