Proposed Power Plant, New Housing Become Top Oxford Issues

Both candidates for first selectman agree Oxford needs to stay rural, but economic growth should also continue.

Two opposing candidates for Oxford first selectman are outlining how they will keep the growing and prospering rural town from losing it’s charm, while still ensuring economic and population growth, according to the Republican-American.

Incumbent First Selectman George R. Temple was selected unanimously by Oxford’s Republicans at the party’s Wednesday night caucus, the Rep-Am reports, and will likely run against former First Selectman Kathy Honson, who served one term from 2001 to 2003 and is the only declared Democrat running. Town Democrats will caucus Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Oxford Town Hall.

A proposed power plant near Waterbury-Oxford Airport and low-income, high density housing are key issues in the upcoming election. Both candidates have been outspoken on the housing issue and are against it, according to the Rep-Am.
