Connecticut Apple Season Suffers, Prices Rise

Fall is the time for apple picking, but an April frost hit the Connecticut crop hard. According to the Hartford Courant, yields are down 16 percent from the previous year.

Still, Connecticut fared better than other parts of the nation. Western New York reportedly lost half of their apples, and Michigan lost 80 percent. The lower yields mean higher prices at the grocery store.  

USA Today reports that the apple crop is down 14 percent nationally and prices could rise by $1 a pound. Juice prices could increase by 20 percent.

Some Connecticut orchards are still offering “pick your own” apples. This list details the orchards in Fairfield and New Haven Counties, but it’s best to call ahead to see what’s available.
