CT's Most Popular Baby Names for 2016

These are a few of the Nutmeg State's most popular baby names, according to new data.

Noah and Olivia were the most popular baby names in Connecticut in 2016, according to new data from the Social Security Administration. The two winning names this year have remained at the top of the popularity charts over the last few years. 2016 was Noah's second consecutive year at the top of the charts, and Olivia was also the most popular name for a baby girl in 2014 before finishing third in 2015.

Released Friday, the data shows there were 222 baby boys named Noah in Connecticut in 2016. The Nutmeg State also welcomed 210 new Olivias last year. (To receive free news alerts from your hometown in Connecticut click here.)

The SSA began compiling the list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880. The administration also notes how popular culture influences baby names. For 2016, the name Kehlani had the biggest jump in popularity and for boys, the name was Kylo.

The bump in popularity for Kehlani is likely to do with the popularity of the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Kehlani Parrish, according to the SSA. The bump for Kylo on the other hand likely has to do with the character in the 2015 movie, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
