Shine Hosts Cut-a-Thon to Find a Cure for SMA, a Debilitating and Fatal Muscle Disease

Shine holds the annual charity cut-a-thon in honor of 16-year-old Ridgefielder Cubby Wax to find a cure for SMA, a debilitating disease.

RIDGEFIELD, CT — Shine, an Aveda Salon and Spa, is hosting their annual "Children Helping Children Cut-a-Thon" to benefit CureSMA, a nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for the disease affects motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat, or breathe.

According to CureSMA, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is caused by a mutation in the survival motor neuron gene that leads to debilitating and often fatal muscle weakness.

"It is always a beautiful day filled with fantastic families and children of all ages having their haircut to support a great cause," said Erin Simmons, Shine’s owner. Simmons has held the cut-a-thon in honor of Ridgefield resident Cubby Wax, 16, since he was in elementary school. Proceeds from the event are given to CureSMA to help find a cure for the disease.

"We will have a lively event with a lemonade stand style bake sale and giveaways in support of Spinal Muscular Atrophy awareness. Come out and get your back-to-school haircuts with this great community event," Simmons said.

The benefit will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2016 from 2 - 5 p.m.. Haircuts for school-aged children and teens up to 18-years-old are $25 for a wash and cut (no blow-dry). To book an appointment call (203) 438-5000.
