Weston's Chris Plummer Wins First Oscar

Christopher Plummer, the renowned actor who lives in , won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film Beginners. It is the first Oscar for the longtime actor whose on-screen career began in 1953, according to the Internet Movie Database.

He is well known for playing the part of the Austrian patriotic Captain Georg von Trapp in the 1965 film version of The Sound of Music.

In Beginners, Plummer portrays Hal Fields, a terminally ill man who declares his homosexuality after the death of his wife of four decades.

Plummer is the oldest actor to ever win an Oscar.

"The average age of the winners has now jumped to 67," Oscar host Billy Crystal joked after it was announced Plummer won.

Plummer beat out Max von Sydow, Jonah Hill, Nick Nolte and Kenneth Branagh. According to The Guardian, the Westonite won the BAFTA and Golden Globe awards for best supporting actor for the same role.

He was nominated for one other Oscar in 2010, for best supporting actor for his work in The Last Station. He lost to Christoph Waltz, who played Colonel Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds.
