Shelton CMT Scores Drop in Grades 6 and 8

Shelton out-performed the state in all but two subject categories.

Shelton's 6th and 8th graders turned in lower scores across the board on the Connecticut Mastery Test this year than they did in 2011, according to data released last week by state education officials.

The CMT, taken this year by more than 390,000 public school students in grades 3 through 8, consisted of seven hours of testing in math, reading, writing, and — at some levels — science.

Students are graded on a scale of 1 ("below basic") to 5 ("advanced") on each section. Though the test is not pass/fail, Connecticut sets a goal range and a proficiency level for each grade and subject.

Shelton continued to turn in strong results this year compared to the state as a whole. Each grade out-performed the state in all subject categories with the exception of 6th grade reading proficiency and 8th grade math goal.

  • The number of 7th graders scoring at or above goal in writing jumped 12.2 points to 76 percent, up from 63.8 percent in 2011.
  • 8th graders at or above goal level in math dropped 7.7 points. (For the state, there was an average increase of less than one point.)
  • The average score for 4th grade math goal jumped up 9.8 points.
  • Shelton's 5th grade math and reading scores dropped while students stayed consistent in writing and science. A nearly identical pattern can be seen for the state 5th grade numbers.
