Did you know that the depth of tread in your tires could be the difference when police determine who's at fault in a car accident investigation?
Chris Cartisano, owner and operator of Precision Tune Autocare, 475 River Road in Shelton, shared that information and other tire care tips at his shop Wednesday.
If tire tread depth is below 3/32's of an inch, it's below the legal threshold and your tire is bald.
"These are the things we look for," Cartisano said of working on customers' vehicles.
Tire Maintenance Tips
Other than a blowout, how can I tell when it's time to replace a tire?
"Tire wear is the important thing we look for," Cartisano said.
He displayed a new tire to show how deep the tread is. It also had tread lines going from the inside of the tire, out. Those are called "skyping" and Cartisano said it displaces water quickly when driving in wet conditions.
An older tire in the garage had tread worn so deep that it was balding in spots. Cartisano also pointed to small cracks called "dry rot cracks" that had formed.
Then of course there's the 3/32's of an inch measure to look at.
How Often Should I Rotate My Tires?
Cartisano: You should rotate twice a year, coming out of the winter and before the winter.
What Kind of Tires Do You Recommend at This Time of Year?
Cartisano: All season tires.
